Amsterdam is a city that is well known for its picturesque canals, rich history, and diverse culture. The city is made up of 8 different boroughs, which are further divided into neighborhoods. Each of the neighborhoods in Amsterdam have there own variations of charm and character, and offers both visitors and locals a variety of experiences.

In this article, we’ll take a look at five neighborhoods in Amsterdam that you should absolutely add to your itinerary if you plan on visiting this amazing city!

On the northwest side of Amsterdam’s center is Jordaan, one of Amsterdam’s most famous and beloved areas. What started out as a working class neighborhood has become an area known for its art galleries, boutique shops, and cozy cafes. Jordaan is the place to go for anyone looking to find the quintessential Amsterdam experience.

South West of Amsterdam’s city center is De Pijp, a place known for its diverse melting pot of cultures congregating on streets named after some of the Netherlands most famous painters. De Pijp is one of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods, and is therefore filled with energy throughout the day and night. Between the neighborhood’s bars, restaurants, and markets, there is no shortage of things to do here.

Amsterdam-Noord is located just across the IJ River from the city center and is quickly becoming one of the coolest places to go in the city. The neighborhood is much more lowkey than some of Amsterdam’s more popular areas, but it is still home to a thriving arts scene, innovative architecture, and some of the best eateries in the city.

Plantage is a perfect place to learn more about the city’s history, as it is also home to several of the its most important cultural institutions and historic sites.
